2013 Recipient

Maria Alfieri has accomplished many things. As captain of Cross Country and Spring Track Teams, Maria created Big Sister – Little Sister. It is a program where younger girls are paired with an older girl who would mentor them through sports and school. As an instructor at Fashion Focus, Maria states that, “I am so glad when I see a positive confidence change in a girl I am instructing because it really feels like I have made a difference”. Maria is also a member of Leo’s Club, where she organized a coat drive to donate coats to the Salvation Army and volunteered at the local soup kitchen. As a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, Maria recorded children’s books in Spanish and sent the recordings along with the books to needy children in Spanish speaking countries. In addition, she collected used soccer equipment and sent that as well. Maria adopted a five-year old child from Honduras and sent her school supplies and wrote letters on a continual basis. Maria has also raised money and helped out at the Magical Moon Foundation, The Scituate Animal Shelter and The Cardinal Cushing Center. “The most influential organization in my life has been The Cardinal Cushing Center.” At The Center, she helps individuals with Downs Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder carry out their daily activities. As a member of a plethora of clubs, sports teams and a volunteer at many organizations we are proud to award Maria a scholarship from the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation. Maria will be attending Providence College in the fall and we believe she will be a positive influence in the lives of others.
